Acute – (1) characterized by sharpness or severity [acute pain]
(2) having a sudden onset, sharp rise

Blinded-study – A study in which at least two separate groups receive the experimental medication or a control/placebo, with neither group being made aware of which experimental treatment or procedure has been given. In a double-blinded study, neither the study participant, nor their study physician know which treatment study participants are receiving.

Chronic – Characterized by being long-lasting or recurring over an extended period of time.

Corticosteroids – Steroid hormones naturally produced by the cortex (or outer layer) of the adrenal glands, or synthetically made in the laboratory. Corticosteroids have a variety of uses, including reducing inflammation and swelling.

Extended-use study – Where study drug is made available to study participants upon completion of a previous trial associated with the same study drug and indication. Study NTI 0501 is an extended-use study where XERECEPT, or hCRF, is made available to study participants who have completed either study NTI 0302 or NTI 0303.

Investigational drug – A drug that has not been FDA approved for a specific condition.

Open-label study – A situation in which both the study participant and researcher (study/treatment physician) knows the treatment that the participant is receiving.

Phase III – The phase in clinical trials where study drug is given to a group of people to monitor use of the drug, compare it to other treatments, and further ensure its safety and efficacy in its intended indication and recipient population. Data from these studies are intended for use in future marketing approval of the product.

Placebo – Something that looks like study drug but has no medication effect.
